I think the United States should do all of the following:
1. In 2009, the first year after the State Quarter program is over, completely redesign all U.S. coinage, except the $1 coin. All Presidents should be removed from coins, and a return to traditional metaphorical representations of Liberty should be re-instated.
2. The dollar bill and two dollar bill should be done away with completely.
3. A two-dollar bimetallic coin should be minted.

To the person who said that it would be a pain to carry around 10 $1 coins: If there were no dollar bills, you would most likely be carrying around 2 $5 bills. If you buy something for $4 you would get two $2 coins in change.
Bills are a pain to count. As a cashier, I know how much of a hassle it is to give back $1 bills in change (they always stick).
As for removing Presidents: Washington was opposed to depicting Presidents on coins.
Also, I'd like to add one more detail: The half dollar should be used more.

The United States is one of the few countries that still prints 1 and 2 dollar bills.

Our currency is the one thing that I can see has worked very well since we become a Nation. I think we should not tamper with the paper or coin currency in America the good Ole USA.

As to the argument that the US is one of the few who do it, well I don't believe we should do something because other countries do it, they should follow our lead, since they want to be more like us anyway.
As to the money, I think we should go back to putting real precious metal into the bills, say 1/10th the value. If counterfitters want to put that 1/10th value into counterfits, then so what, it would not result in a devaluing of money. and it is a good way to show it is real, if done right.
doing away with the $1 dollar paper bill, well, I think not. the paper bill has become a standard of the United States. As to the $2 papre bill... I have not seen to many of them any way.
another issue: we already have problems telling some foriegn coins from our own: the Canadian Penny, some silverish pieces. But the have three coins that have similar appearences with different values here: the quarter, the Half Dollar, and the Dollar coin, that just runs a great risk during those moments when we are just looking for the quick and easy signs of what coin is what. I have mistaken a Half Dollar and even a Dollar coin as quarters before. Perhaps if they had a different appearence, such as the Golden dollar.

what if you purchased 3 dollars at Freds and the 3 dollars at Wal-Marts then you still stuck with 4 coins that weigh a little more than 4 slips of paper. no the coinage should not be overhauled the government and it laws need to be upgraded to keep tragedy like whats happening now from occurring

Sounds like you're just following the ideas of us Brits.
1. Standard picture on the head of the coin (we have the queen's head)
2. We did away with £1 notes ages ago.
3. We have the bimetalic £2 coin.

I sort of agree with you about the dollar bill - they don't last very long, compared to coins, but the US dollar is an iconic symbol and more coins wear out your pockets. Maybe they should all be made of polymer instead of paper.
What's wrong with the presidents?

I think the implementation of your ideas would cause a very sharp rise in short-term inflation which could lead to panic.
I would replace the paper dollar with a coin and get rid of the penny.

I'd rather have ten $1 paper bills in my purse then to lug around ten heavy coins. I hate the new 1 dollar coins.
I don't care who is printed on my money or what it says.

uh.... right. OR, we could just get away with paper money and make it all electronic. That way uncle sam could track your every financial move.
The $1 should be done away with completely? What happens if I want to buy a pop for under $5?
Sorry, but you're wierd.

Heck, they need to do away with the Penny and have a 12.5 Cent Bit to make the math work for the loss of the Penny.
But, I really think we headed for a Cashless society, but, how long it take to happen, I not know.
Here just one article about the penny;

A search for "eliminating the penny" give plenty to read, both pro and con.
