I have a leather jewelry box with plush lining that I've owned for 37 years. I have a lot of gold, some silver, and a little brass.
What type are we talking about? Gold doesn't tarnish. If silver is stored properly, it should be OK for a long time. Brass always tarnishes and eventually looks crappy.
1] Store different metals in different drawers
2] Store metals away from soft stones like pearls, turquoise, jade, coral - or a divided section of the same drawer
3] wipe good jewelry with a soft cloth before putting it away, and check clasps or string for wear
4] if you don't have a lined or divided jewelry box, get some velvet drawstring pouches in different colors [ or make some ] and put different types in different bags, ex:
gray for silver
yellow for gold
blue for turquoise, etc.

because leather sweats which causes the jewelry to oxidize for better results get a wood or even a metal container with some fabric { felt works wonderfully} at the bottom to stop the oxidation because im sure u don't want ur jewelry ruined. GOOD LUCK!!!
