It's all about the money. Give one of the auto makers or oil producers enough of an incentive to develop, produce, and deliver a new product and they will produce it. Say the government offered a five year tax break to the first oil company that develops a new cheaper and cleaner product and gets it into the majority of the market place and a company like Exxon and it's 7 billion dollars in profits would jump through hoops to get it product out there first.

If it gets to that, you'll have European prices, so you might as well do as us Europeans and get decent public transport, use bikes, or walk. Oh, and you'd have to plan your cities differently, and fund alternative fuels. Hydrogen fuel might be an idea.

Why should the government do anything about it... when you can do something yourself.
