did JK Rowling not do her homework well, by putting in the two holidays erroneously into the plot of her stories?

I don't think it's a mistake. I'm a devout christian, but while christmas means a lot to me because it was when jesus was bought into the world etc, i look forward to it most because of a) time off school b) presents. similarly with easter i look forward to chocolate.
I belive that the holidays make it more realistic to us as the readers, and make us more able to associate with the characters. if the book said "they don't have christmas or easter, because they don't believe in it", then rowling would lose half her audience.

A lot of people celebrate Christian holidays; look at the mass-market side of these celebrations. And Christians celebrate the mass-market side of these holidays, following the pagan traditions that have been popularized, such as Christmas trees and wreaths and Easter eggs, etc.

The only thing Christian about religious holidays are usually the reasons the person celebrating them has for doing so.

Christmas and Easter are not Christian holidays they are pagan, anyway like the other guy said there was nothing in the books that said if they were Christian or not.

Who says they aren't Christians? The whole subject of religion goes unexplained in the HP series, except that there is no hint of Satan worship. From what we've seen, the same religions we have exist in Harry Potter's world.

Christmas and Easter are not Christian holidays, they are ancient pagan rituals that were appropriated by the Christians.

i guess theres a common misconception that christmas is only celebrated by christians. Christmas has been widely known and spreaded from christianity to many other people. Therefore christmas is celebrated almost everywhere not only by christians

Why do people who aren't Mexicans or Irish celebrate Cinco de Mayo and St. Patrick's Day?
