When you say you are putting two hard disks together, it sounds like you are creating a RAID array. If so, sometimes they do have to be identical drives (RAID0 striping) or you will get the speed and size of the lesser drive (RAID1 mirror). Either way, you will get better performance with identical drives.

If they are completely seperate in the computer (not in a RAID array) then it is fine to have different drives.

Yes, Serial ATA is the same thing as SATA.

SATA is an abbreviation of Serial ATA, they will work fine together.
