have you got the right router for the right broadband internet/????

A cable internet needs a rounter that handles the signal
a ADSL (telephone Broadband) uses a differnet signal to the cable broadband and therefore needs to use the router that is specific to the signal

Right, is your laptop wifi compatable? is your wifi enabled?
if so, and it's embedded ie not a plugin adaptor you should be able to find any wifi connections to the computer using the zero poin configuration utility

secondly if you are using an ethernet connetcion to the laptop the cable that resembles a phone cable make shure that your network is set up correctly and that's done via the wizard. the other thing is that you havent stipulated if your using vista or xp if your using vista, you will need specific drivers for the router, which may not even be out yet and that's a fact

if it's XP you router should be easy to find, just use the network wizard in windows and pic the picture that resembles your setup and you should be away. if it's still playing up

saying that it's not encryted you have to view the router, as you have no wap. wep etc security set up and you have to read your manual to view your router or click on start
then my network places on the start bar or in the control pannel
and then click on the icon that says show or hide icons for networked UPnP devices (ie your router) ENVOKE the icon when it appears and then procede to put a 64bit or 128 bit security key on the router, your manual will tell you how to as well if you are using wifi you will have to also put the key into the computer via the wifi configuration in windows or via the wifi cards own software

hope this helps

An acronym for Wired Equivalent Privacy, WEP is an encryption scheme used to protect your wireless data communications. WEP uses a combination of 64-
bit or 128-bit keys to provide access control to your network and encryption security for every data transmission. To decode a data transmission, each point in a network must use an identical 64-bit or 128-bit key. Higher encryption lev-els mean higher levels of security, but due to the complexity of the encryption, they may mean decreased network performance.

You may also have heard the term “40-bit” used in conjunction with WEP Encryption. This is simply another term for 64-bit WEP encryption. This level of WEP encryption has been called 40-bit because it uses a 40-bit secret key
along with a 24-bit Initialization Vector (40 + 24 = 64).

Wireless vendors may use either name. Linksys uses the term “64-bit” when referring to this level of encryption. If possible, make sure your wireless network is functioning before attempting to configure WEP. A 128-bit WEP encrypted wireless network will NOT communicate with a 64-
bit WEP encrypted wireless network. Therefore, make sure that all of your wireless devices are using the same encryption level. All wireless devices com-plying
with the 802.11b standard will support 64-bit WEP. In addition to enabling WEP, Linksys also recommends the following security implementations:

• Changing the SSID from the default “linksys”
• Changing the WEP key regularly

First use the browser type setup as in the manual and while connected with the cable supplied. Change the ssid and channel of the router, then under security set the type of encryption and key. Use either 128 bit WEP and enter the key as 26 hexadecimal characters (0-9 and A-F), or WPA with a complex passphrase. Save all your settings and then disconnect the cable. Use the wireless utility on your machine to find your network, set the encryption and connect. Changing the ssid and channel eliminates any risk of a similar unit nearby masking yours.

Just call for support at their linksys website. I would recommend you do it all over again just in case you missed something. Make sure that the settings are correct and to encrypt you need to choose like WEP or WPA.

The best thing you can do is call the customer support. I did this when mine wasnt working and they have all of the answers.
