the valve stem seals will cause one to use about this much oil and yet you wont see any smoke from it,it does it in such a light smoke that you would just about have to be behind it to be able to see it,and it doesn't do it all the time, but they will make it use about one quart or less every 5-800 miles,it doesn't affect the running of it either, and your at the right mileage for this to happen also, but that's more than likely whats causing this to happen,it wont hurt it,to drive it like this though, its not an expensive repair ,usually around 100 bucks or less to do one of those, good luck hope this helps.

Try using Castrol 20/50 High Mileage oil. The factory recommends you use 10/30 because it gives you better gas mileage but as engines wear down clearances increase and thicker oil is needed to keep oil from sucked into the cylinders.

You can also try an oil stabilizer such as Lucas but over time these additives can leave sludge deposits in your engine.

Replacing the valve guide seals would help but can be costly if you don't do it yourself because you have to pretty much dismantle the head. However if you can R&R the head yourself it would be well worth the trouble. After doing this you'll notice a huge increase in power because over the years the leaking oil will have formed deposits on the intake valves reducing the air flow.

hmm, a Toyota burning oil at 160,000 miles. nothing new there. one solution is to go a little thicker oil. if you are using 530 go to 1030, if you are using 1030 go to 1040, you get the idea. this will not stop the consumption but it may slow it down. also you may just want to replace the PVC valve. the vehicle i am currently working on at home had a problem similar to yours but it also had some other issues, severe oil leaks, low compression in all cylinders. it overheated too many times, once is enough but.....
if that valve has any carbon built up on the inside of it, oil can be sucked through it into the engine to be burned.
