I was thinking about getting this Acer laptop:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834115346

However, it only has 512 MB of RAM and I would like at least 1 Gig. So I was wondering, if I wanted a Gig would I have to buy a separate GB of memory for it, or could I buy another 512 MB and combine that with the original 512 for a Gig (1024 MB)?

I've never had a laptop before so I'm not sure if you can do this or not. Thanks.

Acer TravelMate TM2480-2779 NoteBook Intel Celeron M 420(1.60GHz)

System memory Up to 2 GB of DDR2 533/667 MHz memory, upgradeable to 4 GB using two soDIMM modules (dual-channel support)

You could probably add another 512 Stick of RAM. I would recommend a matched pair.

There should be a memory slot where you can just plug in an additional 512mb, and you'll be good to go. Just to be safe though, open up your laptop and verify that you do in fact have an available memory slot. You might not need to actually remove the entire shell though, depending on your laptop model. Some have a little plate on the bottom of the computer you can remove to access the memory slots. Others (like mine) require removing a small plate on top and removing the keyboard to expose the expansion slot. You shouldn't have to take the entire thing apart.

Go to the following link, http://www.crucial.com/uk they can do an on line check which will determine which ram your motherboard supports. They will recommend the optimum amount. You can order on line and although they are not the cheapest it is worth paying for good ram. They guarantee compatibility with your motherboard and give an excellent warranty. They lso give fitting instructions. I have used them many times and always been satisfied. Hope this helps.

It depends on your computer. If you can add on memeory that is if there are empty slots you usually add 2 cards at one time. So if you want 1 Gig you should add 2 cards of 256 mb of memory.
