You can either go to a police station or a local courthouse. If he has a long rap sheet it will be pretty hard to find a job though...

He needs to contact the local courthouses for every single place he lived since becoming an adult. While there are some "services" that will do this, as a former court clerk who conducted background searches, I promise you even the FBI's NCIC records system is often wrong.
A salesman trying to show my law firm how accurate his system was ran my name. I've never been convicted of a felony, let alone served time in jail. His system reported I was currently spending time in a maximum security prison for attempted murder!
Have your friend do a web search of the courts everywhere he lived since becoming an adult. He then needs to call each court and request s criminal background search. Each court will probably make him send a letter with the required information and a nominal fee. He should get a response to each letter within two weeks.

Contact the Clerk of The District (felony) Courts office in the counties where he has lived. If he has ever been in Federal Court (he ought to remember that) he can contact the nearest Federal Courts as well.
The District Courts handle felonies only. If he must include misdemeanor cases, he should consult the lower courts as well.

I would suggest either calling your local police dept. and see if they can direct to a source.
There are programs out there that allow for ex-offenders to gain employment. Try the local unemployment office for I think they can get leads in.

Wow..does he have a bad background or something?
Uh...you could try calling the DMV. They usually have some of it on file. But odds are, if he's going to have a criminal record that bad, many places aren't going to accept him... No offense to him or anything...

The DMV will be useless; the police department can point you in the right direction (as the preceding respondent noted).
That said, your friend has so many "items" that he can't remember all the details. Whoa. But then you didn't ask if you should remain friends with someone such as that.

It is public record so go to the County courts where he may have encountered any legal problems, and they have it all right there. Youc an also look it up on the internet.
