1990 1200 Sportster 40,000 mi.
I'll warm it up for 3-4 mins and barrels feel warm, but still have to run 1/2 mile or so partially choked before it runs normally?

Carb problem? tired top end ? Or?

Check the air cleaner.
A dirty air cleaner will make the bike run rich.
You need extra fuel to get the bike initially started.
But the extra fuel will keep the engine cool.
A lean mixture will cause an engine to run hot.
So, if the air cleaner was clean like it's supposed to be, the fuel air mixture would have the correct balance and the engine would run like it was meant to.

Has the bike sat for awhile? If so there maybe some gunk in the carb or it may just be a little bit out of adjust. Did you just buy the bike or have you had it for a while. I would think that after 4 minutes the eninge should be plenty warm enough for the choke to be out, although riding a 1/2 mile and shutting the choke off isn't bad either, the engine will gain more heat while under load.

Try changing to a hotter spark-plug if possible.

all motorcycles are too lean from the factory, if you put in a stage one jet kit and re-adjust the idle mixture it will be less cold blooded.
