Because people are basically stupid. There are few places out west where the posted limit is 75, but it is enforced very seriously and people generally don't drive much faster than that.

The car's transmission has 4 to 6 gears that control how fast the wheels spin versus how fast the engine runs. To get the best economy, you want the engine to be running as slow as possible at the given speed. For example in my car, at 65mph the engine is running at 2500rpm, which is pretty efficient. However the engine can rev up to 7200rpm, so if you revved up to the redline in top gear that would be over 120mph! If you had shorter gears, then the car would top out at less than 100, but the car would be running more like 3000-3500rpm at 65, and that's not efficient. Because of all this, most cars have a governor that cuts the engine out at around 130mph. Then there is the matter of tires- most all season passenger tires aren't rated to run over 110 or so.

Why not?... but in fact there are problems when engines are governed to a certain speed. And having that extra margin can, at times, get you out of trouble.

I suspect it has to do with the engine. You cannot stop a car from going a certain speed.
The question is very valid.

This is not a question that belongs in Politics. It's basically a fork from your previous do-gooder query about forcing anti-alcohol technology on drivers.
And, I think your question is rhetorical.

Well, we all know that autos are built by men, for men.
High speed cars make a man think his male anatomy is bigger than the other guys male anatomy.
He feels "manly".....

Why do we need big government to tell us what to do? maybe people like to be able to accelerate fast. This is so typical of liberalism (AKA Socialism) the government needs to regulate everything because you and I are just too stupid to govern ourselves.

They build them faster and faster, because some macho owners think it's cool to be faster, bigger, stronger, etc.
