Hey, I've had my gold fish a week or so now, but I've had fish for most of my life. this is my first goldfish and it seems to be building a bubble nest?! It might be gasping for air, if it is could this be because I have put some runner beans in it?

Goldfish don't build bubblenests. If you're seeing a lot of bubbles on the surface of the tank, it's because there's a protein buildup in the water. This will also mean there's a lot of ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate in the tank. These keep your fish from getting enough oxygen, so that's why he's gasping at the surface. You should change about 25-35% of the water in the tank, and check tomorrow if he's still doing the same - if he is, you'll need another water change.

I'd suggest getting a water test kit for the three compounds I've mentioned above - it will help you keep track of how fast these get high and when you'll need to change your fish's water.

I think he's gasping for air, because goldfish don't build bubble nests. Try putting an airstone in your tank. That'll increase the oxygen level and he won't have to gasp for oxygen anymore.
