during the Antebellum period, he was prominently known for being an Abolitionist.
he killed many southerns who were pro-slavery or slave owners.
he's most famous for his Raid of Harper's Ferry.
this raid was to set free black slaves. He hoped to get a revolt going, but it backfired, none or very little slaves actually partook in the raid and it ended in John Brown's sons dying.
Though seemingly small, this was one of the events leading to the Civil War.
um... I'm not sure of the exact quote but he said something about wanting the raid to start a war or split the Union.

John Brown's body lies a'mouldering in his grave.
I think he was a martyr for abolitionism. That was his greatest deed.
There were plenty of religious zealots back then (and now) to the point of being considered crazy but I cant imagine the audacity it took for him to stand up and even die for the cause of abolishing slavery. He was a real hero

He and his sons murdered innocent people who didn't own slaves. Let John Brown's body moulder in the grave.

having read history for 45 years I would give a five star recommendation to the ultimately to the max politically incorrect but 100% accurate book by George McDonald Frasier. "Flashman and the Angel of the Lord"
or any of the Flashman books for any part of history that they cover.........
