Perserving Handprints on T-Shirt?

I received one of those Hand-Y Tee's for Mother's Day and put my 8 month olds handprints on it.

I remember reading on the card something about ironing the handprints inside out with an iron, but I lost the card and cannot remember the exact details.

Do I need to do this step in order to preserve the handprints or will the T-Shirt be OK without it.

You will need to iron, otherwise the paint will wash out.
Mostly you cover the ironing board with paper, white layer at the top, and put your shirt print side down on it. You then press it warm or hot.
