I’ve just got a new Toshiba laptop, I notice the ram is always on about 70% of usage, do anyone know why its using so much ram, and how can I get it down a bit lower?

Amount of available RAM depends on programs (& subprograms,) in use. If you're using the laptop as you normally intend to & don't want to use 70% of your RAM, install more. What's the problem w/using 70% of your RAM, though? Your computer's working, right? If you're thinking it's running too slowly, install more RAM.

Go into the msconfig utility and turn off everything that is not necessary. All of the applications with a check mark are booting up with windows and running in the background. This is what is using up your ram. To get to the msconfig utility do the following. Click Start and then Run. In the run box type "msconfig" without the quotes and click ok. When the utility open, click the "Startup" tab. Uncheck any boxes that you don't want to start with windows. Now click "Apply" and then click "ok". you will be prompted to restart your machine, do so.

There is always the possibility that you may simply need more ram.

This happens especially if you have too many programs installed. This is not good, I can say by experience. See the process that are running in the task manager. End process that you know are from programs that you know that you don't need. DON'T end process that are initiated by the system especially that are called "SVCHOST".

Uninstall programs that you don't need.
