a carpenter is anyone who works with wood and makes it into things like furniture, tools etc.
carpentry is a job that requires knowledge of what to do, how to do it and which tools to use to get the job done.
a carpenter mainly uses the following tools:
saws( to cut the wood in big bits, these may be hand operated or machine-operated)
hammer and chisel (to chip away wood in smaller pieces)
planes( e.g. jack plane... this tool makes a flat surface on the place it is used. you run the plane over the wood and it removes a thin filing of wood, making the surface flat and smooth)
drills(these are either hand-operated or machine tools, for making holes)
also, you use things like borers, reamers, countersinks etc, for a variey of operations on holes.
apart from these, a carpenter uses a variety of tools to mark and measure the parts of wood, especially so that he/she knows where to cut or drill! these could be as simple as pencils and rulers or could be things like vernier gauges or mortises.

A carpenter is someone who works with wood. It is a very general term, which is why you are getting many different answers.
There are many specialties in the world of carpentry. Carpenters who build boats are ship wrights, carpenters who install the moldings in a house are trim carpenters, there are cabinet makers, framers, and wheel wrights. I know I have left so many out of the list, but you get the idea.

A carpenter is someone who builds things, usually out of wood. For instance, a house, an addition to a house, an appartment building, etc. They are also know as contractor's. The limit on their skills can be unlimited as far as the things they can do. Some build the entire house, "lock and key", while other's will only do a portion, such as the framing only. the rest will be sub-contracted to another person.

Both good answers so far.

I've been one for a very long time, and also applied other learned skills in various trades to my own employment.

In a general sense a carpenter is a wood craftsman. Certainly the "classification" has degrees, such as in building a house one can be a "framer" / Rough in carpenter,,, a finish carpenter working with moldings/ cabinetry, etc. I suppose without splitting hairs a furniture craftsman could be categorized as a carpenter as well. I suspect however that anyone in a fine furniture making level might feel a bit put off being tagged as a "carpenter."

The craft takes learned skills, in many areas, such as math (A Biggie) and a learned general sense of proven methods, while also being innovative. It might be also that "carpentry" can be defined as a some manner of "technology" allowing that it needs design/engineering/tool use skill and ability/ accuracy/ knowledge of materials, physics, etc.

With no offense meant at all, to any of my brothers in the trades,,,there are obvious differences between a "Hammer Jockey" and someone with the knowledge and skill levels to construct a house, or read blueprints and transfer that to any construction.

Learning and understanding of various terms is certainly an asset,,,and how they are applied to the trade,,,as well as the uses for various tools,,,even within the same general type,,,IE: SAW.

HOW... differs in each ones methods, thoughts, education, and desire, as much as yours might in the choice of a car.

The end result however, for anyone wanting to be,,or already involved in the trade, is/or should be, to produce a quality product that the carpenter would be OK with signing his/her name to.
