there are loads that do a scan for free, tell you you've got a million bugs and then demand money to clean them for you.

Anyone know of a charitable site that's not out there to try and fleece us poor, paying members of the world?

Try easy cleaner at http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/ecleane.htm
You might also get ccleaner at http://ccleaner.com/ this cleans up files that you don't need.

You must be very careful about cleaning up your Registry! If you don't know your way around the registry, you can do yourself great harm! You can back up your registry, but what's to say that you allow a registry file to be deleted by your registry freeware and then find out the deleted registry file also had something to do with running a backup! BIG problems then! It can happen. The registry cleaners that are "safe", also don't really do too much for you. The registry cleaners that are aggressive, are also the ones that can render your system useless if the wrong file is deleted, and you can't get it back! The only solution then is a system recovery! If you want to use a registry cleaner, then make sure you backup both your personal files and the registry weekly, just in case! Good luck!

Download "Spybot S&D, install it and run it. If this does not cure the problem turn of "System Restore" and run Spybot again. To turn of System Restore, go to Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore. In the left panel of the System Restore window, click "System Restore Settings, and then check Turn off System Restore. After you have removed all the spyware, go back and turn System Restore back on.

The Registry scrubber that I use is "RegscrubXP. You can get it at: http://www.sofotex.com/RegScrubXP-download_L7528.html
