my system has 4 hard drives (not the same but all 40G or larger), 2 ATA ports and 2 ATA RAID ports.

One drive is having a problem. It is the only drive on one port and set as master. No configuration for single on the drive. It will transfer small files but hangs on large transfers.
I deleted the partitions with Partition Magic and tried to reformat. Nothing will reformat it, it just hangs. HHD utility says xfer rate is about 1mb/sec. all others are around 24mb/sec.
Tried SPINRITE - but runs at 1mb/sec so I canceled it.
tried Seagate utility. same thing.
Is drive toast or is there something that will fix this????

thx

It is getting toast. SO if you have any data in it try to save as much as you can.

Boot from the Seagate diagnostic CD and try the drive alone on the port it is on. If it is still slow try it on a different port. Then try a different SATA cable.

If it is slow with all three tests the drive has had it.

Try dban (http://dban.sourceforge.net/), it is formatting software that runs in a Linux kernel, so Windows can't cause any problems.
