right click on the lan connection lower right on the tak bar and click on REPAIR. make sure your wireless is OFF.
Also try port 2 or 3 on the hub. one of the ports is an uplink and it's either 1 or 4.

This means that your connection did not pull a LAN address from the router. If your router is set to DHCP and your local card is set to DHCP then the router is not sending you an address.. (Reboot the router)

If that isn't the problem check the LAN ethernet adapter on your computer and be sure it is set to automatically connect.

If your wireless is working it also connects you to the LAN just like the cable so I am not sure why you want to go back to wired but it should work. (You may need to see if the guy who set it up set fixed lan addresses... if so you need to set a fixed address for the ethernet adapter)

Do not add a second connection. This will cause total confusion to the laptop. If you have a lan connected to the router use the wireless to access the lan. If the lan is not connected to the router, use a cable from it's switch to connect it, then use the wireless to connect to the lan.

What you can try doing is unplug the router and shut down the network and all the computers on the network and reboot it with the laptop connected to the router. You turn the base station on (normally the thing that plugs into the phone line) first, then the router, then the computers. If this doesn't work I suggest calling the people who run your internet and ask them.
