Assuming that you are using XP. Right click My Computer, click Properties, and then click the Advanced tab. Under "Performance" click Settings. In the Performance Options dialog box, click "Adjust for best performance". This will clear all settings. Now put a check in "Use visual styles on windows and buttons", "Use drop shadows for icon lables on the desktop". This will eliminate the box under the icon name. You can check any of the other features that you like, and then click "Apply" and then "OK".

I use a program called Wallpaper Changer
available here
http://www.wallpaperchanger.de/
You can set the icon background to be transparent
and use any pictures you want for background
and change them as often as you wish automatically.
