I have a video file that is .avi and it only plays the sound and no video. I don't think codecs are the problem because other .avi files I have play both video and audio. What is up????

.avi format are only video containers, so the video itself may be encoded using a different encoder, which may cause the issue of video not showing up. Some encodes includes MPEG-4, DivX, XviD, etc.

So if you are not able to see the video, it is most likely that you do not have the codec needed to encode the video. The solution is to install the codec needed to encode the video.

Easiest way is to install codec packs, which comes with lots of codecs that are needed to play most of the video files existed. Some of them that I recommend are Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP) or K-Lite Codec Pack.

You probably need to download and install the DIVX codec.
