The 1903 Cuban-American treaty gave the United States lease control over Guantanamo Bay. In 1934, a new lease was negotiated between the Roosevelt administration and the Cuban government.
The current Cuban government considers the lease illegal but international law does not appear to support that position or at least provides no remedy for the Cuban position.
The current Cuban government refuses to cash the checks of approximately $4000 that the US pays each year.

After the Spanish American War where we liberated Cuba we signed a lease agreement for the land what is known at Guantanamo Bay and the Base. The agreement also stated it take both sides to cancel the lease, and we prefer not to. We send the agreed amount every month and from I understand Castro does not cash the checks in protest. no skin off our butts.

The 1934 treaty with Cuba gave the U.S. an enduring hire to the backside for "$2,000 in U.S. gold funds" (or equivalent) consistent with twelve months. After the Cuban Revolution of 1959, the U.S. persevered to deliver fee, and thanks to a few confusion in Castro's new government, they cashed the 1st verify. The U.S. claims that that is their acceptance of the 1934 treaty, and that they proceed to deliver fee each and each twelve months, regardless of the undeniable fact that Cuba has not cashed any further assessments. The reformatory camp is contained on the backside the U.S. has there, and the Cuban government has no jurisdiction over the issue.

Yes. The U.S. Navy has maintained a base at Guantanamo Bay for decades. It is property that has been leased from the Cuban Gov't going way back, I forget how long now.

Yes, however technically we lease that land from Cuba. The US sends Castro a check every year. He has yet to cash any of those checks.

Cuba is a communist state. We need a good staging area for the liberation of Cuba, and Gitmo is perfect.
I would love to see them try and kick us out! We would crush them like so many insects.

well, if you go back and actually read a history book, you will find a story about a little thing called the spanish/american war. i'm not going to go into detail for you but suffice it to say, guantanamo is a remnant of victory in that one...spoils to the victor and all that...go look it up...
