Specifically it is wireless fidelity but it refers to a wireless specification called 802.11a, b, g, n. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics engineers (IEEE) come up with standards to operate on. The 802.11 has several standards where speed is concerned. They are identified by their letter suffix. The first came out was "a" and the newest is "n" and is the fastest. The "n" standard is fairly new and not widely used yet. The most widely used is the "g" standard that allows transfer rates as high as 54 Mbps.
