It's obvious that you, and a lot of your answerers like to take pride in yourselves for "questioning authority", and for being "independent thinkers". If you have the temerity to accuse this country of atrocities, you are absolutely clueless as what atrocities, and oppression, are really about.
This is probably pointless, but I will TRY to give you a crash course on what the Soviet Regime was, and did.
Do you have any idea what the Soviet missile crisis was all about? You know, when the Soviets tried to place nuclear ICBMs in Cuba under the lie that they were "defensive" weapons? Aren't you aware the the Soviet Premiere addressed the entire U.N. assembly and, pounding his shoe on the lectern, screamed at the U.S. "WE WILL BURY YOU!" ? Somehow you, and some other uninformed folks seem to think there was no threat?
Nuclear War was eminent.
You are also pathetically ignorant of what life is like under communist control. You like to exercise your right to free speech by spouting off in this forum right?
Under Communism:
There are no parental rights, All children are wards of the state. You will serve a minimum of two years in the military, no execptions.
The state will decide your level of education.
The state will decide what you are best suited for as far as employment. As far as that goes, the state will determine what your wages wil be.
There are no property rights. The state will decide where your apartment will be.
The state will determine what you see and hear. There is one official news source, there is one official television source.
There is one official political party. If there is any hope of advancing yourself in your state approved career, you better be a "loyal Party Member".
All art, that includes you musc man, is subject to state censorship. Art must at all times reflect the state in positive, and uplifting light.
Religon is only tolerated as "the opiate of the masses"--Lenin. If any dissent is detected, it is then supressed.
Dissent of any type is supressed. How long do you think you would last questioning Soviet Authority? There were places for people like you to be "reeducated". They were mostly located in Siberia, will the reeducation consisting of hard labor. More often than not, for the rest of your life. It is still impossible to estimate how many of the Soviet Unions own citizens were quietly taken away in the middle of the night by the KGB. There was no right against illegal search and/seizure.
Forget about starting your own business. There is no personal ownership. Even if there were, the state would decide what you paid your workers, the state would decide the quality of the product you made, the state would decide what your profit margin would be, the state would decide how much you could produce, and the state would decide where your product would be sold.
To see that some over-priviledged, over-indulged, over-sheltered, and under- educated people in this country dismiss the soviet threat, and accuse this country of being the great evil of the century speaks volumes of what passes for education, and information that desperetely needs to be addressed.
The Soviet Union was bent, obsessed with world domination.
Be very glad it no longer exists.

That's two separate questions
First one: Yes I think the world would be better, the Cold War never really posed a major threat to the average Joe on the street and Islamic terrorism would never have manifested itself so deeply
Second Answer: Yes I do think the US would still be in Iraq and others, it`s just the Soviets would have been arming and training the Iraqis. 9/11 would probably not have happened and the Taliban would never have got a foothole in Afghanistan, so the US wouldn't have an excuse to carry out "modern day atrocities" (your words)

I don't think it would really make any difference in any way. so how long was the USSR in Afghanistan before they split up any way? Did the USSR ever stop the US from doing anything that they wanted to do? not that I recall. Russia is on the rebound and maybe if you go over and lend a hand you can help them become the greatest nation on earth.

Food for thought.I lean towards a yes.The USSR wasn't a country I liked but yes America wouldn't have done or felt free to do all the things they do now.
I'm sure the world needs a counter balance.I wished Europe would take up that role but don't see that happening anytime soon.

Shhh...look carfully, quietly, over your shoulder, then ask the same question about the U.S.... Imagine 50 soverign states, as the constitution had intended.... Oh my...Oh my..
(now go read the constitution of the USSR...surprise surprise)
Now just as quietly ask yourself... "Can it happen here too?"

The USSR would simply be another "threat" for the "God fearing" west to overcome.
Not better or worse.

So you think the US is performing atrocities? You must be a product of a liberal education. You certainly have no clue as to what is going on in the world.
