I need step by step instructions. Oh, and "/" is used as in a fraction. Not for division.

Thanks for all the answers. Now I know how to do it. And yes, it should be 10x in the second equation, not ten. I'll pick the best answer later.

1. -3(2x+6) = 6(2x-12)

First: eliminate parenthesis - use the Distribution Method.

-3(2x)-3(6) = 6(2x)+6(-12)
-6x-18 = 12x-72

Sec: combine "like" terms - subtract 12x from both sides (when you move a term to the opposite side, always use the opposite sign).

-6x-12x-18 = 12x-12x-72
-18x-18 = -72

*Add 18 with both sides.

-18x-18+18 = -72+18
-18x = - 54

Third: solve for "x" - divide both sides by (-18).

-18x/-18 = - 54/-18
x = 3

2. 3/4(16x+24) = 1/5(10+25)

3/4(16x+24) = 1/5(35)
3/4(16x+24) = 35/5
3/4(16x+24) = 7

First: eliminate parenthesis - use Distribution.

(3/4)(16x)+(3/4)(24) = 7
(3*16x)/4 + (3*24)/4 = 7
48x/4 + 72/4 = 7
12x + 18 = 7

Sec: subtract 18 from both sides.

12x + 18 - 18 = 7 - 18
12x = - 11

Third: divide both sides by 12.

12x/12 = - 11/12
x = -11/12

Write the equations correctly:

-3(2x + 6) = 6(2x - 12).

3/4(16x + 24) = 1/5(10 + 25).

2007-05-13 04:57:27 · answer #2 · answered by Mark 6 · 0 1

distribute -3 across 2x and 6 to get
-3(2x + 6)
-6x - 18
-6x - 18 = 12x - 72
18x = 90
x = 5

note: the / in a fraction means division, but anyway...

3/4(16x + 24) = 1/5(10 + 25)
3/4(16x) + 3/4(24) = 1/5(25)
12x + 18 = 5
12x = -13
x = -13/12

- 6x - 18 = 12x - 72
54 = 18x
x = 3

15.(16x + 24) = 4.(10x + 35)
240 x + 360 = 40 x + 140
200x = - 220
x = - 22/20
x = - 11/10

first equation:
==========

on the left side, distribute the -3 through the parentheses. on the right side, distribute the 6 throught the parentheses. your equation will become:

-6x - 18 = 12x - 72

now get all the "x terms" on the left side of the equation. do this by subtracting 12x from both sides. your equation will become:

-18x - 18 = -72

now add 18 to both sides:

-18x = -54

now divide both sides by -18:

x = 3

second equation (i'm assuming it should be 10x)
=============

distribute the 3/4 through the parentheses on the left side and distribute the 1/5 through the parentheses on the right side:

12x + 18 = 2x + 5

subtract 2x from both sides:

10x + 18 = 5

now subtract 18 from both sides:

10x = -13

divide both sides by 10:

x = -13/10

-3(2x+6)=6(2x-12)
multiply out...
-6x-18=12x-72
isolate variable
(add 18 to both sides)
-6x-18+18=12x-72+18
-6x=12x-54
(subtract 12x from both sides)
-6x-12x=12x-12x-54
-18x=-54
divide by -18
x=3

3/4(16x+24)=1/5(10x+25)...should it be 10x?
distribute
12x+18=2x+5
subtract 18 from both sides
12x-18+18=2x+5-18
12x=2x-13
subtract 2x
12x-2x=2x-2x-13
10x=-13
divide by 10
x=13/10

FYI the 1st equation by the first guy is wrong
also, should it be 10x on the right side in the 2nd equation?
