I think it goes alot deeper than trying to imitate cultural mores.
it starts with the human need to be a part of the whole ,to fit in and be accepted by their peers. call it the herd syndrome. sub consciously the herd recognizes that being different is bad or unacceptable .unsure how to go about relating on a deeper level,we imitate those we wish to relate to thus attracting them through their recognition of their alikeness.and yes this limits our freedom because we have to limit our movments according to what is acceptable by the herd.
I believe this happens mostly in younger people ,because they are still finding themselves ,older people (most) grow out of the need to conform to the herd mentality.they find new ways to relate on deeper levels and more meaningful ways and eventualy follow their own path based on their needs and values.(personal freedom)
so no i dont believe we are forced into following the herd. its a choice we make on an emotional level.

Yes to all your statements.

Popular culture is a changing beast and the media that is on the forefront of that change is what we're communicating on now.

The world wide web has a plethora of different cultures and people with different behavioural norms. The problem here is having folks exposing themselves to varying views rather than being channeled in one direction or another.

Our information choices are huge today. The challenge is to convince individuals that exposure to differing views, be it television channels, magazines, books or web sites, is something to be embraced and cherished not feared and and discounted.

Peace

Its music, fashion, lifestyle. If someone chooses to follow everyone else, that's in their mindset. That is what they're going to do to fit in. If you're your own person, then who cares what the standards are set at? Just because Johnny and Jill are smoking pot and think it's fine doesn't mean I do. It's all in your head. If you feel like popular culture is limiting YOUR freedom, then screw popular culture.

The main agenda item for every culture is to control you, by numerous sociopathically inspired means, so that its "owners" job of maintaining their power and status is made as convenient as possible.

A population of sheep that does as its told, as unquestioningly as possible, is always the "owners" ideal.

If you allow it to like anything else. If you are a sheep and follow popular culture instead of your own style and beliefs.

i do no longer understand who m.f hussian is yet besides he might desire to have the means to paint something he needs. Theses so-stated as "gods" are only figments of mind's eye besides. the only element you could not do is to declare something derogatory some jew, wherein case it is going to become a hate crime. In hinduland you have cows as gods too, yet I consume cows as quickly as I also have an excellent Mac or a Whopper with cheese... mmm yummy. i assume you may desire to call them Godburgers.

It doesn't limit freedom of expression.

Just makes it harder to get outside of the box in terms of idealism.

It certainly does for the weak of mind who don't want to have to be bothered with thinking for themselves, or the vulnerable who haven't yet learned or been given good role models to teach them how to think for themselves.

You can choose to respond the way others want you to respond and think, or you can choose to think for yourself. Evaluate your own values, and don't get so hung up on other peoples values.
