In all honesty, because people want to feel enlightened, special, as if they alone know the answers. Admitting that someone else may know at least as much, takes away the feeling of superiority. It's a lot harder to look down your nose at someone, when you're staring them straight in the eye.

Because everyone is very arrogant and believes that their morals, values, ideas are the best and all others are incorrect if they disagree with our own.
Because of this people are only willing to let other people have assumptions etc if they coincide with their own

Because we fear how other peoples decisions in regards to their freedom will impinge upon our own lives and choices.
