How about mixing the glitter with a decoupage medium, then applying it to the wood? I've never tried it on wood, but have done this many times on glass, and it works wonderfully!
Good luck!!

Coat the wood with glue first and let it dry. Then apply your glitter. It wouldn't hurt to spray some clear on it after the glitter drys.

Have you tried PVA (white wood glue). It dries clear. If I need to use glitter i mix it into PVA and brush it on .

One problem with this is that the glue is shiny when dry, like gloss varnish. This doesn't matter if you want a gloss finish. If not a few drops of mat medium in the mix should significantly reduce this problem.

They make spray glitter. It has glitter and an adhesive in it to make it stick. For extra security you could go over it with a clear acrylic spray.

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.
