I don't think there's one clearcut answer to that. Consider that the US is one of the largest countries in the world, you'll realize there are thousands of radio stations than span accross the US, all of whom play the various genres of music and have different groups of core-listeners.
I like rock music, I grew in Maryland just over an hour away from DC. The rock station that I prefer in the Washington DC/Baltimore metropolitan region is 98Rock in Baltimore.
They are very up-to-date on the new rock, but mix in the recent classics, and the true classic rock in as well. Basically you can hear anything from Led Zeppelin to 3 Days Grace. Plus among all of the changes that have gone on in radio around this area, 98Rock has been steady and consistant to it's long-standing active rock format. Plus I enjoy listening to their DJs, where most people flip stations to find other songs playing.

KUSF 90.3 in San Francisco, and on itunes (public) and live365
from midnight to 6pm, monday thru friday, it is a different dj every 3 hours, and half of what they play is "new" (released within the last 3 or 4 months or so)
every dj has their own style, so you will get to hear a little of everything new in the indie/noise/experimental rock/hip hop/jazz and music from around the world genres
you will hear it on kusf first.

I would say 101.1 in the Portland area. It plays alot of rock and most of its really good. And the people on there talk about the most random things.
Also there is 105.5. Its ok and the music is ok. It is played in Hood River and The Dalles. I like Jonathan and Mary in the morning. They are really funny and they also talk about really random things.
