Solve for the "x" variable in the equation.

x^2 + 6x + 8 = 0

First: factor the expression. multiply the 1st & 3rd term to get 8. find two numbers that give you 8 when multiplied & 6 (2nd term) when added/subtracted. the numbers are (2 & 4). rewrite the expression with the new middle terms.

x^2 + 2x + 4x + 8 = 0

Sec: with 4 terms group "like" terms & factor both sets of parenthesis.

(x^2 + 2x) + (4x + 8) = 0
x(x + 2) + 4(x + 2) = 0
(x + 2)(x + 4) = 0

Third: set both parenthesis to equal zero.

a. x+2 = 0 (subtract 2 from both sides - when you move a term to the opposite side, always use the opposite sign).

x + 2 - 2 = 0 - 2
x = - 2

b. x + 4 = 0 > subtract 4 from both sides.
x + 4 - 4 = 0 - 4
x = - 4

Solutions: - 2, - 4

x^2 + 6x + 8 = 0 can be factored as follows:

6 can be either 3 + 3 or 4 +2 and 8 is 4 X 2. so, we can write the equation as

(x + 4) (x + 2) = 0 and thus we have x = -4 and -2

x^2 + 6x + 8 = 0
x^2 + 4x+ 2x +8 =0
X(x+4) + 2(x+4) = 0
(x+2)(x+4)=)

either x+2=0 or x+4=0
or x= -2 x= -4

therefore x= -2,-4

Use the formulae to solve this quadratic equation where you a=1, b=6, c=8
x = {-6 +/- [sqrt(6^2-4(1)(8))]}/2(1)
= [ -6 +/- sqrt(4)]/2
= [-6 +/- 2]/2
= -4/2 or -8/2
= -2 or -4

you need to factor it so it looks like this ... (x+4)(x+2)=0
then to find the possible values, you take the opposite of whats in the brackets.
So x=-4 and x=-2 this is called setting the values equal to zereo.
