go by a compression tester and use it on all cylinders. all of the readings should be within 10% of each other. if not, you have a problem. a head gasket will be signified by either white milky oil or oil in the coolant, or a smoking exhaust or on a compression test two neighboring cylinders low. at the same time all three of these situations can represent a) cracked block, b) a cracked head or c) blown head gasket.
unfortunately when you buy a vehicle from an individual rather than a dealership, one thing is always missing, WARRANTY. i hope you got a good deal on the car at least. keep us informed so that we cat help if you get stuck, but that is a tight engine bay. even the oil filter is a little bit of fun to get to!.

Well one way to check for a internal head gasket leak would be to check your engine oil see if the oil is alittle watery like a clear color to it or well runny would be one word. You can buy a leak down test at a auto parts store for about $20 follow the instructions and see the results. More than likley your engine is suffering from what is called vapor lock where the cylinders are full of antifreeze/ water and since you can not compress a liquid as we all know the engine can not turn over. Check to see what condition the antifreeze in in if it is brown then you've got oil in the coolant.

you could check the compression? oil in the coolant, coolant in the oil. coolant coming out of exhaust? exhaust(gas) bubbling out of open radiator cap?

Broken timing belt?

If the head gasket was blown, it SHOULD still start at least.

If you can manage to get it started, you'll smell something that smells kind of like rotten eggs and burnt hair, That happened to my nissan quest...
