In most stores where they're n the cups, they aren't at a proper temperature (too cold) and have no room to swim - I'd be depressed too!
I've bought two bettas recently and they're in separate 2.5 gallon tanks with heaters, filters, plants, and driftwood. One has a snail for a buddy, the other has two ghost shrimp. They're both extremely active, good eaters, and you wouldn't recognize them now as the same fish I bought - the colors on both are much deeper, and one went from being a bicolor, to a tricolor. One's a male and he's constantly building bubble nests. Once the female is out of quarantine, I'm planning to spawn them and raise the fry.

Yes! They are actually very owner-friendly fish. I have 3 of them. One lives in a 1 1/2 gallon tank. One lives in a 10 gallon community tank. Another lives in a 20 gallon community (he is by FAR the friendliest). They patrol their entire parameters, ever on the lookout for invasion by other male bettas..haha. They get along well with a lot of different fish (NOT guppies as they think they're other male bettas!). My betta in the 20 actually waits to swim against my finger before swimming off to eat his flakes.

they are very good pets. not depressed at all.
They just have no room to swim around.
You can put bettas with other fish... just not with other bettas. So if you have a big community tank with a lot of other fish, you could put a betta in there. That's where mine is and he is happy as can be =)

does not you be bored in a tiny area? i don't think of he's depressed I in basic terms think of he's bored. Get him a greater tank it is heated and filtered and he will perk back up. additionally positioned some plant life in with him. some thing he can relax on. In a gallon bowl you're able to be changing his water thrice each and every week. Betta's want room to swim for workout or they get bored. additionally what you feed them can impression their temper. Feed them a distinctive weight loss application including flakes or pellets designed for them and then supply them bloodworms and brine shrimp for a manage each and every few days.

They are depressed because they are swimming in bowls that aren't even 1 gallon. They need lots of room to swim around.

they do look depressed, dont they? i just think that their fins are too big and floppy for those tiny cups. but once you get it home in like, an ivy bowl?, they swim around normally.
what i do, inorder to see if they are capable of being happy is i take two bettas(male) and stick their cups in front of each other. they should do that popping out gills thing of theirs. if not, dont get that one.

Yes. My bettas are very happy little creatures. They are in individual one gallon tanks, and love to look at each other, puff up, and swim about.
