Should we follow some of our peer countries by instituting a universal healthcare program, or should we maintain the status quo?

No thanks. We already have too many people who aren't paying for their health care flooding the system every time they get a sniffle.

I think the problem is with the wording of the question. The US doesn't need universal health CARE...it needs universal health INSURANCE. There's a big difference between the two. Ford supplies cars, State Farm insures them. If you say 'care' the charge of 'socialism' and 'look at Canada' and all that other BS gets posted. Too bad, because this just muddies the waters. Universal health insurance would solve a lot of problems. First, it would be cheaper for everyone because everyone would be paying something. Health care wouldn't be 'free', but the costs would be shared out. At this point 43 or more million Americans either pay little or nothing for care so the cost is passed on to those who do have insurance. Universal health insurance is doable, it would cost less, it would relieve business of a burden of expense and the nation would be healthier. It won't happen, but universal higher education in an increasingly competitive world won't either. We will have wars though...some think that's better than health insurance. (A little irony there.)

I would love to have universal health care in the US, because I would benefit from it, and it seems to be the right thing to do. Our citizens deserve this, but there is one major problem with implementing it. Illegal immigration. There are already 12 to 20 million illegal aliens in this country and most of them do not have health insurance. Plus, millions more aliens come to this country every year illegally and they get free health care about our emergency centers. Giving health care to all in this country would be another incentive for aliens to come into our great country illegally, and that would drive up the cost of health care dramatically.

We need to put up a stout fence along the entire US/Mexican border, and to adopt laws that make it harder for aliens to survive in our country. Only when we have control over illegal immigration should the US consider universal health care. Check the sites below for more info about the problems caused by illegal aliens.

Show me a peer country that has adopted a successful national health care policy and I will consider it. Otherwise, leave it alone. It's expensive now, but it ain't broken !

No thank you. Every country has to ration health care in some manner. I would rather it not be a political process to determine the recipients. It is bad enough already.

No and no. We need tort reform so doctors don't have to pass on the expense of malpractice insurance to the patients and the insurance companies. We to stop running to doctor for our prescriptions of Ritalin and Prozac, for every child and every time we get the blues. We are a nation of lawsuit happy hypochondriacs.

No we should NOT...it would greatly lower the standards for health care and frankly the government is already too far up in my wallet...
