Get a container,(a couple of gallons).Hold the outlet tube lower than the filter, and the tank water level. Suck. When the water begins to siphon place the outlet in the tank. Then turn the power on and it should run just fine.(You may have to empty the water that's in the filter now to get this to work.)----Good luck.----PeeTee

It's normal to have trouble starting it the first time. I get this question a lot at the pet store I work at. You might have to take the top off once or twice and put it back on to make sure that it is completely sealed, if it doesn't have a good seal it will have trouble starting. It's good that you filled it with water, that will help. Just keep in mind that your fluval is probably close to the floor and the hoses into your tank are a couple of feet above it. It's not like a hanging filter that only draws the water from a few inches away, it will sometimes take quite a bit of pumping to get the fluval started. Once it gets going though it is one of the best filters you can buy. Just keep trying and good luck!

I assume there is a good seal after you lock the top part on. You have to prime it with the little pump for a while, not just two or three times. The first time you will have to pull water up through all the tubing replacing the air that's in there, and it can take a few minutes. It will work just keep pumping. Hope this helps. I had the same problem with my filter.
