Communication. With the ability to communicate increasingly effectively over long distances, it has become possible for great minds to collaborate from opposite ends of the world. In addition, people can find out about other people's ideas and build on them in a much shorter period of time. With the telegraph, telephone, and now the internet, the delay in the transfer of information has shrunk incredibly. At one time, a letter from a scientist in Tokyo to a scientist in New York City would have been carried by ship across the Pacific, through the Panama Canal, and up the east coast of North America. It would have taken weeks. But now, the Asian researcher can use e-mail or an interactive work environment to share not just text-based information, but graphic files and complex simulations or data sets, with her American counterpart in real-time. As a result, people can develop new ideas, techniques, and applications much faster than ever before.

The Industrial Revolution which put mass production of goods into the hands of people with money and power.
If you wanted almost anything in 1860 you had to make it yourself or buy it from an artisan who made it for you, be it a dress, purse, horse shoe, drinking glass or plates.
A person put clay on a table and turned it by foot power and make you a plate or bowel. They baked it in an oven and glazed it.
With the industrial revolution a plant could make thousands of bowls in a single day at a fraction of the cost of what an artisan made it for.
All you needed was a bunch of women and children to work the assembly line.
This make businessman and money man into makers of things that used to be made by craftsman.
They could now produce hundreds of dining room tables a day at a plant. An artisan like, for example, Jesus, might be able to do two whole tables in a day with his own hands. Maybe it would take him two days for one table.
Now a plant is turning out hundreds per day. Maybe not as good, but now EVEYRONE could afford a table, not just some Rich Roman Senator!
As a result of this boom which REALLY took off with the perfecting of AC electricity people start to enjoy electric washing machines, fans, radios, lighting, TV sets.
OK. If you lived in 300 BC you might have to travel thousands of miles by camel or horse to find ONE PERSON who knew how to work with glass to make you a LENS so you could read again. It would take days to make the right lens because there was no real science so it was trial and error and you had to pay this person a lot of money.
Thus only Princes, Bishops, Mayors and Generals could afford a monocular or magnifying lens.
Today a machine stamps them out for $10 charges your opticiain $20 and your optician charges you $100 per lens and you get it in a few days. In some places you get it in an hour.
In 1970 to process color film took a tank, a dark room or bag. A $20 kit contain 12 different chemicals. You had to keep the temperature 1/2 degree accurate and time things exactly and put in 12 chemicals and it took 30 minutes or more before your film was done. Then you had to print it and process it in a cylinder using six chemicals and this took another 30 minutes.
Today you go to Walgreens and some high school kid puts it into a machine and it comes out dry and ready to print in 15 minutes and they put it into another machine and you get 24 4x6 prints in 10 minutes
It costs 1 cent per print and they charge you $8.59 making 98% profit on the paper and chemicals (although both the machines cost Walgreens half a million dollars to buy).
It takes no brains to do things anymore. Machines do all the hard work for us.
That's why the boom.
When you no longer needed to be on a river to have a plant or a mill because electricity was everywhere, things started to happen over a wide area of the world.

This is right out of complexity theory. Complexity breeds complexity, so complexity tends to rise exponentially. It's like the human population, more people have been born in the last century than in all prior history, because it also rises exponentially.
