This practice among the retailers of the world is done straight across the boards for ALL holidays of gift giving !! They literally capitalize on the fact that most everyone will come out searching for something to purchase in order to have a special "thing" in hand to seal the "show of affection" that society deems "necessary" on THE day !! It is "opportunizm" played to the max !! And, they even go so far as to let us all know what "dorks" we are -- if we don't "love" these people enough to "give them the very best" !!!!
There are ways around this, however !! And, the best way I know of --- is to go for extremely "untraditional" gift ideas for any particular holiday --- the "things" that the general population are not in "hot pursuit" of FOR that day !!
Just one example here-- and I'll leave the alternates to YOU !!
Take Mom's Day -- the traditional run of things --- says --- flowers -- jewelry -- clothing -- and maybe even certain houseware !! THESE ARE THE VERY THINGS ONE SHOULD STAY CLEAR OF --- for they will certainly be at their PEAK price from some time BEFORE until the day after !! Opt for things not normally given on this day --- say -- a set of tires for Mom's car --- or a super thick gift certificate book to her favorite cafe --- or --- a pre-paid year of cable TV !! Or --- get a pile of photos that YOU have that SHE doesn't -- and MAKE a super sharp collage of the family for her !! ------ JUST GOT TO GIVE CANDY ?? Try going to a special shop that sells this item and hand pick a selection of treats from the case as opposed to the pre--boxed garbage they nail you with ten prices on !! It's a much better deal anyway you look at it !! GET INVENTIVE !! -----JUST HAVE TO GIVE JEWELRY ?? --- Give her a gift certificate to a good shop (they really don't push THESE during this time for they know that the prices will be DOWN by the time the individual comes in to claim the balance) --- You set the price you want to pay out --- the prices ARE down by the time Mom makes it in to claim her loot -- she gets something that SHE wants most of all --- and everyone is a major winner -- except the retailer with the "before holiday inflated prices" !!!
Hope this helps somewhat --- But -- believe me here --- if you are continuing to spend money ON these inflated "before" holiday "deals" --- the only butt kissing that is going on HERE -- is YOU --- for THEM !!!

First of all, OF COURSE the stores are going to rip you off right before any holiday. They maximize their profits just because most of us aren't savvy enough to shop for our Christmas gifts in July and our Mother's Day gifts in January.
Secondly - and more importantly - I believe most mothers would be a lot more appreciative of your gift of time and love instead of some expensive trinket from any store. Why not give her a hand-made 'coupon book' good for 52 weeks of helping around the house; fixing her breakfast in bed; spending a day with her in her garden; promising not to argue with your siblings for an entire month; doing the laundry for a month; or, the best gift of all, telling her, "I love you, Mom..." every single day. My mom's been gone since the first day of spring, 2000; I wish I'd have told her how much I loved her a lot more than I did. It probably would have been the very best gift I could have given her - and it didn't cost anything. Yet, I (like most of us) was "too busy", too tired, too preoccupied, etc., etc.
When your mom's departed, only then will you realize how much more love, kindness, appreciation, and TIME meant to her than all the store-bought presents you ever gave her. -RKO- 05/12/07

Every single day of "honor" seems to follow this "recipe" of sales management---ever go shopping around Christmas? You THINK you are getting sale prices because the stores TELL you items are ON SALE... however, what you are paying $100 for around Christmas ON SALE, was marked $75 five months earlier and by November, the price was jocked up to $120 so that in December, it could be ON SALE at $100.... Ever look at the price of GAS lately???? or ANYTHING else? Easter is the same thing and let's not forget HALLOWEEN---those are NOT true SALES the stores advertise...... they are a temporary drop off of prices that were marked up close to the particular SPECIAL EVENT so that when they bring the price back down CLOSE to the event it is made to LOOK like a "sale".... Ok economics 101... Now, when referring to Mother's day.... it, like Christmas, was started to HONOR something... it was the marketing stragedy of STORES that took Mother's day from a day of HONOR to a Day of BIG EXPENSE--- Greed and profit margin.... SO, instead of purchasing something expensive at a store, why not make your own Mother's day card and COUPONS that your mom can "cash in" for things like SERVICES you will provide HER.. (cleaning her house, doing her dishes, mowing her lawn, WHATEVER)... free to you and MUCH appreciated by HER... All a mother REALLY wants is to spend the day with her child/children in a way that honors HER --she doesn't necessarily WANT the expensive gifts... just your TIME and EFFORT!!!

It doesn't really. You can make your own card, you can write a letter of appreciation and gratitude. Time with your mum costs nothing, being kind to her, not mouthing off to her costs nothing.
Mums usually have more flowers and chocolates and gifts than they'll ever need. It's not the material gifts, it's time spent and love shown. Believe me , when your mum is no longer with you , you'll realize that you'd give any amount of money just to be with her for awhile and talk to her and laugh with her .

Because those barracudas feed off the love we have for our mothers. It's amazing how everything goes on sale after holidays about love and the same item was three times as much the day before. It's crazy how we take advantage of each other in this country, all in the name of a profit.

Flowers cost more just like Valentine's day. The 2 big hallmark holidays. Loving your mate and honoring or treating your parents for all they have done for you should not be limited to once a year.

They always have done. It is the same in the UK. I now put money in my mother's card I send to her for Mother's day. it is better because she can buy what she wants with the money.

it doesnt have to cost anything you are all being exploited, a plant from the garden centre 2 pounds a home made card, will mean more to any mum than a lot of money spent

That is one of the reasons the woman who started it later denounced it.
Instead of it being a day of honor, is was just another reason to hawk goods
