The British spent more on their empire than they gained from it, according to some economists. Take the "Jewel in the Crown", India. They left roads, railways, telegraphs, hospitals, schools, radio stations, people trained in every specialty you can imagine when they handed the place over in the late 1940s and India has never looked back. Similarly in most of the other countries they colonised, (with notable exceptions) these are among the more successful countries in the world and that includes the USA. The record of some of the other European colonisers is not so good, though the French were probably next best.

Hey, why not be proud of the British Empire? The British Empire is partly responsible for about 34% of the world driving on the left side of the road, schools, English law, roads, building, bridges and a bunch of other technological advancements from the U.K.

Chuck in stable governments, while as a colonial power and that should count for something. Did the British exploit their colonies? To some point, but you only have to look at the Faulklin Islands to see an example of some of where that money went.

Well, at one time Britain had stolen most of the world. They owned almost every country and stole all that country's wealth, and imprisoned anyone who rebelled against them. They have always been seen as aristocratic, and it was evident during the first world war when they sent 50,000 young men a week over the top for nothing that they did not put much emphasis on its citizens. The Royal Family have indulged in such acts of squandering it is just untrue. I have grown up with the presence of the British Army on my streets and if you were a true British citizen you would hang your head in shame at how they treated us. They murdered our little children with plastic bullets. They kicked in our doors and took away our fathers, put them in jail without trial. They colluded with other forces to kill large sections of the catholic population. They electrocuted people by the testicles in interrogation centres, and the one thing that really mattered was the fact they did not own this country or have any business here. They have used these methods all over the world, especially in other so called "colonies" like India, and they have never once said sorry. I am not proud of Britain, but I am trying hard in my heart to forgive it. And I must point out you are an empire no more.

I think we certainly should be proud of what we used to have. For such a small country to become the most powerful in the world for some time was a great achievement and as many historians will agree, a lot of the time things improved under the British rule.

What we shouldn't be proud of was the way we went about it. While we occupied parts of India and Africa we committed many atrocities, in fact that could be said of most places we occupied.

Yeah we should and don't let any of these liberal student types tell you any different. What our Empire did for the world is to big a topic to bore every ones a rse off on yahoo answer, but the world has never seen or benefited from an Empire like ours before (although the Romans might say differently) and if we consider the size of our island then it just makes the nations achievements even more extraordinary

I don't think Britain's got anything to be proud of. I'd be ashamed. What's to be proud of? Forcibly taking control of other countries, slavery, torture, and becoming rich on the back of others' suffering? if you're proud of that then you're pathetic.

If you think it's important to "be at the top of the food chain" then you're obviously the kind of person who enjoys trampling over others. That's not anything to be proud of either.

the empire doesn't exist any more so what exactly is there to be proud of?
