99% of the people at pet stores pull s*** out of their a**es. They have NO idea how big your turtle is and they usually are very under educated about the pets they sell. If it's the size of their head, they might eat it. My turtle has bitten them in half or bitten their tails off and then eaten them. You should already have on hand a good pelet food to feed your turtle. They need it even with the goldfish. Fish should only make up about 50% of your turtles diet at any age and do not have enough vitamins to keep your turtles healthy on them alone. If your turtle is over 4" in diameter then you should also incorperate (besides the 50% fish) 25% a good pelet food and 25% leafy greens like collards, mustard, kale, etc but never lettuce of any kind as they are 99% water and just wasted calories. If your turtle is under 4" in diameter, feed it 50/50 of fish and pelets.

Most red eared sliders will only chase the gold fish for so long before they give. They make a high quality turtle food that is made up into pellets and easy for the turtles to grab and eat. You can also feed the night crawlers " worms " and you'll also be able to train them this way while feeding them.

Most pet shop employees are not as up on turtles as you would like.

Fish HAVE to be the right size for the turtle to catch and eat in one bite.

Other food options would include frozen or live krill, shrimp, worms, bugs, snail, beef heart, etc.

Here is everything about red eared sliders. What you are looking for is in the Nutrition section. You might be able to use the other information at some point.

Feed him the turtle food, rip up some lettuce and bread, feed him bits of shrimp.....when he gets bigger he may go for the fish. You may also want to try out the tablespoons of brine shrimp. (Pet stores will tell you anything to sell you stuff!!)
