i'm in need of some emergency cash right away and i'm told not to go to a pawn shop to sell my diamnd engagement ring that i no longer need because i am now divorced... i still have the original certification of my diamond engagement ring that was originally appraised at $7,500 - but the actual purchase price was only $3,995... where would i be able to get the best sale price, at the local newspaper classified ads, a local jewelry store, or a national chain jewelry store?

We all think we are buy more then a ring for are love one in the back of our minds that it is worth it because of the cash value but really there are so many of them out there that it is hard to re sale. I was was engaged and called it off and she gave me the ring back and it is a real beautiful ring but I do know that I want to get married but In my heart I knew that I couldn't put this ring on someone else finger even if she didn't know so I did some home work and checked around you are so right pawn shop isn't the way to go. Another place that is hard but could work was ebay but I wasn't too sure on this because there are so many way to get rip off and I also heard that you have to know what you are doing Now if you know of someone that is on that type of a site and ask them to list it for you and you have to have a picture of it as well A MUST. Then that could be worth it. What I did was made a deal with a Local Jewelry store and I sold to him and he didn't give me crap on it as in cash but I was able to buy another one much like the one I had and made another deal with it so It was okay for me still took a lost on it but in my heart it was the right thing too do. What is strange is that I have bought another ring and I am waiting for my dream lady to be with me HEHEHE, I know I am weird. I do not tell this story to anyone but you. What I would do is to go around and try it with some of the other stores and see what they would give you anything on it and if they have any info and it is a plus you have your papers and if it is a real good Diamond then they may just buy it they really do not care about the ring. It's curious how jewelry stores are like car dealerships once it leaves the lot it's value drops considerably. Were ever you sell your ring it won't be worth much. You will get pennies on the dollar for it. You might get more from an individual but then it has to be cash or you take the chance of getting ripped off. It's sad to know that something worth so much at one time is now hardly worth anything at all. Your right pawn shops are a joke but the others are not much better. All you can do is either sell to individual or take it to several jewelry stores and see who gives you the best price....

I tried to sell my engagement ring after my divorce. I tried jewelry stores, E-Bay and pawn shops. NO ONE will give you what it's really worth. The best advice I can give you, is try to sell it in your local newspaper to a private individual...always keeping in mind that you will never get the price you are asking for.
Having done inventory for several jewelry stores, I learned that they have in most cases, a 200% mark-up. Highway robbery, isn't it?

Im from New York and have done a lot of looking around before i committed to sell my engagement ring. I emailed and called places and most seemed to be sketchy at best. The company I ultimately went with was Manhattan Buyers. They seemed to be friendly and more responsive than the other places I contacted. They called me back and emailed to confirm our appointment. That made me more comfortable.

The best thing would be to sell to an individual you will get more money... the others that you mentioned will not give you the best deal for used jewelry... The stores mark up the merchandise they sell to you ....

Hate to say It, but the setting is worth nothing, mabye $10.00
the diamond holds some value, but the mark up is so crazy, that no jewelry shop will give more than a couple hundred bucks for it. try ebay used jewelry, good luck

Classified ad is your best bet you will not get any money from a Jewellery store since they only buy new. I would expect to maybe get half of what your ex hubby paid for it if that. Consider it is old and used If he paid 4 grand for it when he bought it depending how long you two were married it may be worth 1500.00 dollars now if that. Also remember alot of brides are going for white gold or platinum so if it is yellow gold it will not be as desirable.

Honestly, I know what people say about him, but if you're in Toronto, Oliver Jewellery.
I went to SIX DIFFERENT places and got quotes for like $500-$600. I went to Oliver Jewellery and ON THE SPOT he offered me $675 and I got him to agree to $750.
I asked around and the reason he can give you more is because Yes... her makes less from you, but by giving you more he gets higher volume of people.
PS also sold a laptop to him and got a few bucks for it too.
