Hi just wondering can fighting fish change there sex after a few months? I had a couple of males that decided to loose their color and long tails and turn and start to look like a female. I'm unsure why they have done this. They are all separated of course and eat same as each other and so forth. I asked a Pet shop owner who had no idea. Was wondering if anyone else has had this happen? The Pet Shop person suggest I put the two fighters in together to actually see what would happen and if they have changed sex but I'm not willing to do this.

Fin and Tail Rot is a common problem betta owners face. It is most often caused by dirty water. If the water is left unchanged, their own feces and uneaten food particles begin to break down, causing bettas to become stressed and more weaker to the bacteria naturally present in their tanks that causes fin rot. The best measure against this is to always keep your tanks clean. A betta that has recently been under a high period of stress, may also develop this illness. Sometimes regardless of how well a betta's tank is maintained, the illness still strikes for unknown reasons.Fin and Tail Rot is a bacterial illness, so you will want to make sure your medication is intended for this purpose.

One medication that is often used is Jungle Fungus Eliminator. For 1 gallon of water, use 1/4 teaspoon. For 2 gallons, 1/2 teaspoon and so forth. Treat the tank for 4 days then do a complete water change. If fin rot is still present, repeat dosage

This disease comes mainly from dirty water. If you keep his water VERY clean Mr. Betta will never get tail/fin rot. It is not overly contagious, and bettas will more than likely recover if treated promptly. Fins/tail will grow back, though may not have same color or may not look as good or be as long.

I have never heard of that. Maybe they have fin rot or are ill.
The water being too cold could make the color fade from them. You do not need to put the fish together. Just place them side by side if you wanted to do it that way..but remember when you do this it will stress the fish. Do you have any pictures you could post? Go to the below web site and look up illness. HTH!

That's like saying can a boy go to a girls bathroom (lol). Anyway it's very impossible for something like that to happen. Maybe they're sick or fin rot. If you put a mirror in front of a male betta it sees its own reflection then if he- what do you call it????- spreads something near to his head than it's a boy and do the same thing to the other one

If they have lost alot of their tails and colour they are probably sick and you may need to treat the water, can you provide more details on what they look like, is there anything growing on them. Also what do you have them in ,a betta will do best in a heated ,filtered tank of at least 2 gallons.

Betta fishes don't change sex. It's just a matter of reaching maturity and showing their true sex.

It sounds like dirty water, leading to fin rot. Change the water more frequently.

I dont think its gender changed although this is not common to any fish. Its usually that they develop late in their life that makes them turn to another gender.
