Dried flowers and herbs are very nice. Also bits of thread, fine glitter, and even a little dryer lint will work.

Dried flower petals give a very pretty effect. Darker fibres also give a pleasant overall texture: you can use well washed sheep droppings, goat droppings, horse droppings &c ... any animal which eats only grass or leaves and has a reasonably solid dung is worth trying. The wash water makes a good manure for roses, too! In Sri Lanka they are making paper entirely from elephant dung and it is surprisingly attractive - pale fawn and with the variations that come from the different plants that elephants eat.
