Old Spider or new Spider?

Alfa's always had reliability issues in the past, but I think these days they're as reliable as any other manufacturer.

I was going to get a 156 SportWagon but found out that it only had a lap-belt for the middle rear seat. Not good for 3 kids in the car...

Well I drive a 1984 spider and it is a regular driver. I have had no problems with it during regular use. Where I bought it is a dry desert climate so rust was not an issue but these older cars must be inspected thoroughly in the door sills, boot floor (the battery is back there and the floor pans. The engine is a solid unit and goes for years with proper care. Check the transmission for noises between gears as the second gear syncros go first. Some spiders came with a hard top and you can by aftermarket versions for year round use. I love my spider and I don't know if I have bee lucky but it has always performed for me.
I wasn't sure if you are in the UK but I included a link to a UK supplier.

exceedingly stable automobile. I presume you advise 1981-1993 fashions. If it is an 80s kind, do not pay too a lot for it. $4,500---$6,500 could be greater advantageous than sufficient for a severe-high quality sparkling one. you will might desire to locate an Alfa mechanic. with out it you're doomed. those vehicles are not quickly, the two, so get used to being blown off via Honda Civics many times. susceptible factors are susceptible synchronizers interior the transmission, head gasket oil leaks on the returned of the engine. Engines are injected via Bosch so are good. purchase the proper one you may arise with the money for and supply it ordinary maintenance and you would be shocked how good those vehicles are. do not purchase a rat! low fee isn't low fee sufficient!

Not the 1981 to 1993 models....they have Bosch fuel injection and are pretty darn reliable as long as you give them regular maintenance.

The earlier spider with SPICE injection can be fussy.

The reason Alfa got a reputation for not being reliable is that Alfa Spiders are cheap to buy and thus 95% are clapped out pieces of junk that were ruined and neglected by their indigent lazy owners.

These are not Toyotas! You have to open the hood, check things, replace things regularly, be nice to it.

And most of all, don't buy someone else's clapped out pile of junk.

Buy the best Alfa Spider you can afford.

Prices for good ones should range $5,000---$8,500

stay away from ones with the kuglefischer injection system this was a mechanical system similar to one for a diesel. the later cars with bosch L-box and LU systems run well. watch out for rust [even if only a little is showing you may have a major problem] be sure to have your knowledgeable and trusted mechanic check it over thoroughly before any money changes hands and regard it as a cherished toy [this means you will also need to have a more reliable means of all weather transport available] with the top down on a sunny day and everything is running good these cars can't be beat and every little aggrivation it gives will seem worthwhile

Only problems I've ever had with all the Alfa's I've owned is the transmissions. The transmissions are nortiously horriable and failure prone.

Are you buying a new one or a second hand one? If new then the issues with reliability are not really an issue so long as it is serviced regularly.
If however it is a second hand one I would be very care full, check for the service book to see that it has been serviced correctly.

All Alpha's are beautiful cars but they are renowned for their poor build quality .

Every time Top Gear or someone tests a brand new Alpha you can guarantee the door handle falls off or it just breaks down .

Don't buy an Alpha unless it is brand new and covered with a manufacturers warranty , and even then you must be happy to accept that in 3 years your car will have lost at least three quarters of it's value .

For a bargain coupe look for Hyundai's .
