If you can't walk properly, you really have something that needs to be examined by a medical doctor. I advise you to see your doctor first thing Monday morning.

When you strain a muscle (which is what a "pulled" muscle actually is), the muscle fibers contract to protect itself. Thus you have a muscle spasm. Spasm also creates pain, the more pain - the more spasm. It is a cycle that has to be broken in order to get relief.

Muscles are strained by overload - either by too much work or being caught in a 'weak' position. (In other words, an odd position that places too much stress on a smaller muscle.)

Think of it this way. If you expect a punch, you flinch. Muscles try to protect themselves in a similar way without us thinking to react.

Because the muscles of your back support your upper body mass, there is a tremendous load on them. It is not usual for a muscle strain to cause you to walk in an odd position. Also it is not unusual for a back spasm to last for a week or so. As we get better, we tend to get careless and 'test' it. Also simple things like sitting position, bed mattress, work habits, etc. keep it aggravated. Fitness level is also a major factor, although well-built athletes often have problems due to amount of muscle mass. (Big people usually aren't designed for distance running)

Ice, heat, stretching, etc. are all treatment techniques used to break the pain-spasm cycle.

If you have pulled a muscle, the cream Deep Heat or similar works well to relieve the pain.

It is always good to stretch and warm-up before strenuous activity so you do not injure yourself.
