I did a little research on this, mostly because I haven't anything better to do. There are two "generally accepted" possible origins of the phrase, "a stitch in time saves nine".
The most obvious (and simplest) is the one that's already been mentioned: by repairing a torn garment quickly (a stitch), you will save yourself the trouble of having to repair a much larger tear later on (nine stitches...possibly more).
The OTHER explanation I found is that the expression stems from a very old naval tradition, involving burials at sea. Apparently, when a sailor died, they would use nine pounds of lead shot to weigh him down (so he would sink). The body, and the lead shot, were sewn into a fabric body-bag.
To insure that the body, the bag, and the lead shot would remain together, they would actually sew the bag onto the flesh of the corpse...right through the corpse's skin.
Sometimes, way back in the old days, a person who appeared "dead" wasn't really dead, and the act of piercing his skin with a sewing needle was often enough to wake him up. If this happened, the sailors would have saved "nine", as in nine pounds of lead shot...in addition to the dead sailor himself!

A stitch in time saves nine (stitches). It means it is better to catch a rip or a problem early because it is easier to fix then.
