Disney pin trading itself has been going on for a while, but the current "Official Disney Pin Traders" pin trading started in the year 2000 at Walt Disney World. Pins were passed out at the parks before 2000 and available for sale, but never traded with Disney cast members officially. Since 2000, and the massive gain in popularity Disney Pin Trading is now available at all Disney Parks(with the exception of a recent suspension in Hong Kong because of counterfeit pins).

Ever been on VMK? It was started for teens/tweens but has evolved to an virtual world for everyone. Create you own virtual character and roam the Virtual Magic Kingdom. There are new pins released every week to month and most all can be traded. Did I say it's free? For those days when you need your Disney fix but can't escape the real world!

I'm sure it started with the very first pin, and the first pins may have been made when Disneyland opened in 1955.
