I bought this IBM computer sometime in October last year (2006) and a couple of weeks later the fan started to make a very loud noise, almost like a scream. I replaced it with a bigger fan but i connected it staight into a powerppoint and not into the computer itself. This quietened the sound down a little but it is still quite loud. How can I stop this annoying noise??

One: Get some "Canned Air" and blow all the dust out of the inside of the computer (sometimes a nasty process-you may want take it outdoors to do this!). Two: Replace the fan, the bearings in these things are cheap and not sealed, dust can get into the bearings and cause them to seize up. Third: Reduce the power to the fan from 12 volts to 7 volts. Here's how:

I got 2 fans in mine. Cheap little 3" fans for a couple of bucks and they are quiet. Now if its your harddrive squealing, You need a new hdd. We have had very bad luck with loud hdds. You can't stop the noise.

Have you cleaned it?
I would have to agree with the others. If you have tried cleaning it and its still noisey buy a diff one. They are easy to change. Also If its not attached firmly it might rattle or vibrate.
