your mum sounds like she might be taking you for a pap smear! i have never had one but they do not sound good at all. you are meant to get them every year to see if you have ovarian cancer.
dont be scared it is part of life
good luck

The reason could be that your mom is concerned about your periods, but these days some drs are encouraging their adult patients to bring their teenage daughters in to observe what goes on at these offices, and also just to talk to see if the young lady has some questions and such so that when she's older it won't be so frightening.

The dr may do an exam first depending on the reason you are going but you can also request that you speak to the dr in plainclothes first before any exam is done.

When it comes to the exam he will insert a special instrument called a speculum which looks like the bill of a duck. It should not hurt. If it does you can ask them to stop.

They have special speculums that are designed just for examing virgin women (didn't know this til years later though).

Also, if the exam hurts it's either because you are tense (and it's understandable to be nervous because it's the first time but try to remember to relax), the dr is too rough (which is why I said you can ask them to stop), or there is something wrong such as an infection.

A really good gynecologist will not only listen to all your concerns about being nervous about being there and any other concerns you have about this but also let you know what is going to happen as it happens if you have the exam done.

But definitely you can request that you talk to this dr in plainclothes first before any exam is done. Doing it this way will help make the experience less scary.

If a pap smear is done at this visit it is done to screen for cervical cancer (the testing for ovarian cancer is different). This exam should not hurt either. They take a special brush to take some of the cells from your cervix. They then get sent to a lab for analysis. The results come back in about 2 weeks. There may be a bit of spotting for a day or two after this test but that is normal. It is caused by the irritation of the brush.

I don't know how old you are but they don't usually start doing pelvic exams and pap smears til they are 18 or 21 years old or they are sexually active whichever comes first.

But as I said before when a young girl goes to the gyn it's either because the mom suspects something is wrong such as with the period, or she just wants you to get familiarized with what goes on there so that it's less scary and less intimidating for you when you get ready to start doing this in the future.

I am not sure if its different in different countries but we don't have pap smears until we have lost our virginity. If it is that though no it doesn't hurt, you will just feel a bit uncomfortable for a few minutes but the doctor will make sure it doesn't hurt. All they do it swab inside your vagina to collect some cells, they use a funny little thing to hold open the vagina which they insert and then they put in the swab. Its quick and painless.

I suspect though that if its the same as where I am from you won't be having a smear, maybe you will be going to talk about menstruation, the pill etc just a chat maybe.

It's called a speculum. It's meant to open you up a little so the doctor can (visually) inspect your cervix. I hear it's not painful, but it's not the most comfortable thing in the world. Best bet would be to talk to your doctor about your concerns before the exam begins.

If this is for cancer testing it's really nothing and very important. In Belgium women can get this for free every year.
