just across the street. they asked, but where can we catch a cab?......my question is, considering they had no luggage which state would they most likely have come from?

ok, so the question was where is the hotel. i pointed it out and said, it's a one minute walk. they said, no, we'll take a cab. there ware traffic lights from where i was, right across the road to the hotel, so traffic was not an issue. it was daylight, so darkness or danger was not an issue...

Maybe they just wanted to know where it was and were going to grab a bite to eat? Maybe they misunderstood you and thought you pointed down a street? Unless you saw them get into a cab and direct it to the hotel across the street and watched them get out and go in, you really don't know what they needed the cab for.

If you are unsure of the traffic density and direction in a foreign country it is safer to get a taxi to even nearby destinations. In Florida once I stayed across the street from the place I ate breakfast I always drove there not through laziness but traffic conditions.

I don't know but, I live in New York, and many people who are not from NY find it to be very frightening/confusing, they quickly find out that all of the B.S. they've heard about NY is UNTRUE, people are actually very nice, and will stop to help out someone that is lost, I have personally walked people down into the subway, and put them on the right train, culture's are confusing, and you should always stop to help someone out. A survey was done to find out which city was the most helpful to tourists that were lost, NY came in NUMBER 1 !

I had a friend that stayed in New York for a couple of years. They had a car but hardly used it. They always walked their kids to school and would get looks from locals dropping kids off in cars. They said that locals dropped kids off in cars even if they only lived 600yds away.x

New York? They probably were asking two separate questions i.e. where is the hotel and also where they could catch a taxi.
