well since im from melbourne, i have a pretty good sens of what to wear. right now it's winter and dresses with skivvys or shirts underneath are in worn with opaque stockings, round toed ankle boots or ballet flats, cardigans [preferably grey, as grey is this season's colour], coloured waist belts like red or blue or tan.
if your going for the casual, just a pair of jeans, a top and a cardigan go well
with guys, its pretty much just jeans, good runners or whatever and a winter sweater or something.

Melbourne is a fastidious city with a good apprecition of the finer points of life. The well-dressed woman in Melbourne never goes anywhere without a hat and white gloves. While floral frocks are still seen, many women are more daring and wear tailored clothes. The two-piece with a single string of pearls is much favoured these days. More than one string is considered to be ostentatious unless you are Sonia McMahon or the Queen.
Really, Melbourne has moved out of the 1950s for the most part. Wear what you like. You will soon pick up what is right for any occasion. If in doubt, ring the club beforehand and ask.

Well, we are pretty laid back, but for a bar or club you can't go wrong with a pair of jeans, nice top and heels for a woman or jeans/slacks and a casual shirt for a man. Most clubs will let you in on that, and I can't think of a single bar that wouldn't. Make sure you have nice shoes though, that's one thing they often pull people up on. Lace up black shoes are fine for men, or something similar, but steer clear of sandals or runners. For women, it's pretty easy, just stay away from flip flops/sandals/thongs.

To answer your question more adequately, we still get dressed up to go out to a club or bar. Women wear dresses, skirts, nice pants with a funky top, men wear shirts, jeans. We're not so relaxed we wear shorts to a club!
Wear whatever feels most comfortable!
Check out Australian Cleo to see what kind of things we're wearing-

IN Australia - as long as you wear something decent - you are fine.
Going to certain clubs though - there is dress rules - you can't wear singlet or thongs (thongs may have different meaning if youare AMericans, thongs in Aust is footwear) and shorts or heavy work clothes (like boots and overalls).
But generally, something comfortable, smart casual is good

never wear any long dress or skirt because of my height, it certainly makes you look shorter and fatter.
