Here's whatsisname not feeling too good and going out to top himself, he lets the rest know as if they didn't already and the rest keep doing what they were doing, whittling sticks maybe.
A team is a team is a team. all for one and one for all, the team wins or loses, it's not a question of the individual.
'Scott of the Antartic' and his shameful crew turned their heads while a fellow crewman killed himself in the mistaken, or hopeful, belief that he was helping them.
It was a shameful disgraceful episode in British history and 'Scott of the Antartic' is a shameful disgraceful example of leadership to all of us.

You absolutely miss the point of it. He was telling them where he was going, and that he 'may be some time' means 'don't waste your energy to come and look for me' - he was sacraficing himself for the team. How good would it have been if he kept on using their resources even though he knew he was going to die, in a selfish way? They could not have done more than make him survive a little while longer anyway - at the expense of them all. What could Scott have done? Demanded that he stay and die inside a few days later? In such extreme situations individuals sometimes have to be sacraficed that others may survive - and if they do it of their own will then good for them.

Captain Oats did what he thought was right thing to do in the situation. Why do you try to judge a situation that happened before we were all born with todays ethics.
Captain Scott could do nothing to stop him ,if you read the accounts you would see that all were in a state of advanced malnutrition and hypothermia, Oats thought he was only doing what he considerd was the honourable thing,To lay down your life so others could live.It didn`t work but history is littered with this type of actions.Shindler,Hiedi TenBoon, or an Ethiopean mother giving her last food to her children

Robert Falcon Scott, noted explorer who attempted to find the South Pole.

He was despondent in his failed attempt, coming from a seafaring family on both sides, his mother and father. He had so much to carry on his shoulders, great expectations from his country, his friends and family, he just couldn't bare the disgrace of not being able to succeed. Shame, he thought, would come to him from all, so he did himself in.

So often, people try to succeed through their failed attempt, and do not see any other way out but to take their own life.

Indeed, it is sad, but he just couldn't face his life any longer. Taking his life was his only solution in his mind. Sad.

Bet you would not have had to guts to even try so why not keep quiet and let others who appreciate those with some life in them attempting to explore the unknown world. Man never got to his present state of knowledge by sitting on at home doing nothing.
